Night Mayor

I drive in London sometimes. When I do, I flirt with road rage, declaring that the Londoners are bonkers (when driving at least). Now I know that they really are bonkers. It appears that Londers didn’t listen to Kester. Now I will resort to prayer. Perhaps we should have a 5 week delay and stuff some extra votes for Ken.

No wonder they can’t put them out!

Sorry, couldn’t resist this. This picture was on BBC News Front Page. The title was ‘Bush declares major fire disaster’ (well yes!) - I looked at the pic and said to Lyn - they’re never going to put a fire out with a lightsabre! We seriously do pray into world current affairs, and pray for safety for those in California and for the injured and loved ones of those who have died.

d’aujourd’hui le jour

Today is going to be a long day. We’re in France on holiday, 3.5hrs drive south of Paris. I’ve decided that I’m not going to join the 60,000 English who’re descending on Paris today for the Rugby World Cup Final. Probably not anyway. As we’re on holiday I need not to go home needing another holiday, and Lyn could do without me being pasted for the next couple of days. I am an experience junkie and the though of watching this game on the big screen on the Eiffle Tower  is almost irresistible, but not completely. We’ll watch the game here at my parents house tonight. I rate Englands chances quite high, around 30%, with the probability still a South Africa win. Whatever, the boys have done so so so well to get to the final. Allez les Blancs!

Apple, Starbucks and Amazing things

Apple launched is new range of ipods today. Check them out, amazing. Basically they improved their products, added new lines, AND slashed their prices. It is incredible how they manage to stay ahead of everyone else purely by being more innovative. A function of their new ipod touch, a wifi, full screen ipod (similar to iphone) they’ve done a deal with starbucks that means that whenever you are in starbucks you can purchase the song they are playing with one click on your phone using itunes on the ipod. They have recognized where people spend their social time.

As part of the presentation, the top dog at starbuck spoke for a bit. He reveal that starbucks open 7 new stores every day! Also, that on average, their customers goto starbucks 18 times in a calendar month. Now there is something for the church to chew on.

One final thing. Towards the end of the presentation, Appleman himself Steve Jobs asked everyone involved in bringing this product to the market, to stand, apparently half the room stood. They were applauded, and honored there and then. Church has something to learn from that too.

Married 9 Years

Our Wedding Day

Lyn and I have been Married 9 years today. I’m blessed by God to be married to such a wonderful woman. It’s been good, and it continues to improve. Without Lyn I’m not sure what I’d be like and I don’t really want to know. She is a fantastic mum, and I love her so much.

Openness

I was lying in bed this morning trying to summon the energy to live today. I feel that much in our life is “out of line” at the moment, and I can’t quite put the finger on why that is.

I reflected on my core beliefs about and desires for life: to be in an evolving relationship with God, and to be apart of an evolving community of people who live for God, for one another, and for Gods purposes for the world and people in it.  I reflected how the basic posture of this life is one of openness - being open to God, and having an open sign to other people on the door of our lives. I find that difficult knowing that we are, where we are for only a limited time. In that sense, I feel that I don’t really belong here, and I’m not sure if that means I’m “closed for business” at the moment.

Is it easy to be open? Does it come naturally? Or should I ask: why is it so difficult? How do you build the discipline of openness into your life?

Prayer Synchroblog: When I’m spoken too

Lyn has been involved in initiating a syncroblog on prayer today. I readily admit that I’m not good at prayer - in terms of discipline. Whenever I’ve tried to institute it in my life it has felt dry and soon grinds to a halt. So how do I cope in pastoral ministry without a set prayer life - well not very well at times. But I do end up praying a fair bit as I make my way through life.

  • I’m motivated to pray when something in life “stirs me up” - a piece of news, or in a conversation with someone - sometimes I just think - I have to pray, and quite passionately at that. Sometimes I pray in tongues, usually as I’m walking down the street! (I try to be discreet) I find that I pray like this when I’ve not idea how God can change a desperate situation, but trust that He can.
  • When someone asks me to pray, I will pray. (most of the time)
  • But by far the greatest motivation to pray to God in my life, is when God initiates the conversation. It’s a bit like the idea that we only love God because He first loved us; it’s Him who initiates it. When God initiates conversation, speak to me, gets through my thick skull, ear wax or whatever … then I talk back to Him, there and then.
  • So, usually its God who prompts activity in our relationship, not the other way around.

Other “How Do You Pray” Synchroblog participants include:

Cindy Bryan, Lyn Hallewell, Erin Word, Alan Knox, Julie Clawson, Heather, Lydia, Kathryn, Che Vachon, Joy, John Smulo, Mary, Paul Mayers, Sonja Andrews, Michael Holcomb, Cynthia Clack, Jon Peres, Paul Walker, Susan Barnes, Rachel Warwick, Patti Blount, Brother Maynard, Glenn Hagar, Nate Peres, Barry Taylor

    Facebook

facebook logoWell, whilst I’m having some time off blogging (nothing interesting to say) I’ve turned my hand to Facebook over the last few days. It’s great. I’ve found loads of old friends, and there many more to hunt down. I’ve also had a couple of pleasant surprises. My profile is here if you’re interested in dropping by and making some casual chit-chat! I’m off on holiday with the family for a couple of weeks, and will catch up with everyone when I get back and maybe have something to say on this site too.

    Signing Off

I’m signing off this blog for a while. I’ll still be visiting the blogs I already visit and commenting. I found it increasingly difficult to articulate the things going on inside of me and so will wait for a later date. Please pray for us. We’ve got lots going on at the moment and a lot to process.
